Vienna - Tuesday April 9, 2019

Tuesday I joined a tour to a nearby monastery/winery.

This is my friend Sarah, who was on this and the previous walking tour.

Me. The Klosterneuburg monastery in the background was rebuilt in a Spanish style by one of the Habsburgs.

It's the strong bearded guy again. I guess he comes here to drink wine on his day off.

The monastery church. Roman architecture with Gothic towers, left, added later.

Rococo interior. Not the original equipment.

Klosterneuburg played a role in the famous Ottoman siege of 1683. The town was taken over by the Ottomans but the monastery was not. I'm pretty sure this is what is depicted in this mural on the ceiling of the church. As the Ottoman soldiers are killed, they are ejected from this grand artwork, landing in a lesser artwork. A Viennese conception of hell?

We were told that the 17th century organ is famous.

Some of the older decor is displayed in a basement. Jesus is king. Ancient, pre-Elvis iconography.

This famous altar piece is considered a masterpiece of 12th century metal and enamel artwork. It is on display instead of at the altar of the church so people can see it.

Altar piece detail. These four panels are from the middle row, where the story of Jesus is depicted.
